What happened in the world in the time of the Cultural Revolution in China?

ThatOneGirl asked:

My Chinese professor posed this quesiton to us. The Cultural Revolution in China occured in the 60s and 70s. Along with that, many other countries in the world experienced sweeping changes in social climate and policy. The question was: Why were all these events related- what was happening in the world at the time? My best guess is it this supposed sequence of changes is a product of the Vietnam War. But honestly, I have no idea. Thoughts?

Vietnam was a byproduct rather than a cause. Look at the Cold War and the battle between Communism and the Western World. Vietnam was just another battleground between the two sides. The Cultural Revolution was a fight against the corrupt influences of the West

The Cold War was in full swing in the 60’s and 70’s. The link leads to a good site that discusses the connection between the Cold War and the Cultural Revolution.

In addition to the Vietnam War the United States was being rocked by the Civil Rights Movement and riots in the streets. Western Europe was experiencing a wave of domestic terrorist groups. The Middle East was in turmoil over the Six Day War. Czechoslovakia had tried to liberalize their Communist government and been invaded by Russia. This was the height of the Cold War and the United States and the Soviet Union were nose to nose armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons. There was a lot going on in addition to the Cultural Revolution and Vietnam War.
